Nihon Tai-Jitsu |
| From
your first class until the day you will receive your black belt,
you will follow a step by step initiation process. Each level (KYU) will introduce
different
basic techniques. Being a first Dan Black Belt means that you have
understand the basics of Budo and that you are now ready to learn and
practice the "way of the Warrior". Hey, it had just
begin! Every thing you learned before was just a
"discovery", so be proud of what you have already achieved
but remember there is so much more to learn.
From white belt
to black belt is ONE circle, and every Dan is a new
circle, wider
and deeper, but harder and longer to achieved. The rewards are consequently
bigger every time you achieve a circle, and from my experience:
It's really worth the effort. Below, you will
find some examples of training for each level. The program
may vary a little bit concerning the choice of techniques
according to your Sensei (teacher) and to the group of students itself.
However, Concepts (Tai-sabaki, Jiu, Kuzushi...), Basics (24
techniques), fundamentals (Kihon) & forms (Kata) will
remain unchanged.

|
| From
Shodan to Nidan - First degree Black Belt |
|
This
level can be reach within 4 to 5 years of serious training.
Staring from the white belt (6th kyu in the Japanese
system), every person who enroll in a Martial Art class must setup
this level as his/her first goal.
During this
program, the Budoka will shape his body, discover the basics of
throwing, join locks, chocks, fall and blocks. Martial Art really
starts when you become a Black belt.
Keep a good
attention on learning basics such as 24 fundamental techniques,
Kihon waza, basic Kata and Tai-Sabaki. Black belts
should be able to control any aggression coming from an average
person or even two.
|
 |
| From
Nidan to Sandan - Second degree Black Belt
|
|
Now
it's time to add more effectiveness in the techniques, train
harder and start to add speed. The stronger your basis, learned in
the first Dan program, the quicker you will reach this level.
This level
focuses on power, speed and physical challenges. You will learn to
push yourself, and try out your techniques. If it doesn't work...
good, you are on the right way. Just train harder!
Concentrate in
Randori and Shiai, test other Budoka in sparing, try yourself
against other styles. keep a low profile and add as much
experience as you can. You may suffer some injuries during this
period, so work hard to get muscles, fitness and flexibility. You will learn
Advanced Kata, resuscitation techniques known as Kuatsu and advanced
defenses against weapons. Now you should be
more effective in self defense against three average persons or
one much bigger and aggressive opponent.
|
 |
|
It's
time to add more techniques and be more precise in your control
without loosing your focus on increasing your Fighting skills. You
must put together TAI and Gi (Body & Technique).
You will study
more KATA and start to focus on counter techniques. You may even
start to specialized in some type of techniques or have your
"specials", favorite techniques. Train harder to
be good in all types of defenses: Atemi, Shime waza, Nage waza,
Kansetsu waza. Choose some specific techniques that you
will perfect and train even harder.
A Third Dan Budoka
must integrate the 3 level of Budo; TAI - GI - SHIN. Mastering
TAI, working on Gi and Discovering SHIN. It is like a tower: The
larger and deeper the base (Tai), the stronger the walls (Gi) and
the higher and most beautiful the Building (Shin).
|

|

|
Ok,
now you must have fully acquired the first level which is TAI and you
already know countless techniques of all kind (GI). Your techniques
should have both YANG and YING aspects according to your opponent's.
You must now
concentrate on mastering the techniques and start to add more of
your own personality and research to it, without changing the art
itself.
You will ADD, not change
nor lessen. You may personalize some techniques for yourself, not
for your students, because you are
still fare from the level of a Master. Besides, your students will
be disoriented because they are not ready for change. Be careful not to criticize
what you learned from your own sensei, because you just start to
understand a part of it and you might regret some of your actions
and words in the future.
At that
time you must have started already to teach for several years and
your success should be seen in the attitude and level of your own
students. This is the first level of development of Shin (heart or
spirit). In the meanwhile Budo have already changed the way
you think and all he experiences acquired on the tatami should
start to greatly shape your life outside the dojo.
